We Can Do Better…
This beautiful Saturday morning on the pier held both joy and a reminder of why the smallest acts of kindness matter.
The moment I arrived, my beautiful feathered friends were flying toward me from every direction. Wings filled the sky, pigeons lined the railing, and the sun shone mysteriously through the clouds. Adonis was perched in his usual spot, watching over everything. Every day feels like a celebration when I see them. It’s a feeling that’s almost impossible to describe unless you’ve experienced it.
But loving these birds also means seeing things that are difficult to see.
A couple of months ago, I started cleaning up fishing line and trash on the pier because I kept seeing birds tangled and injured. So many of these beautiful creatures lose toes and feet because of discarded fishing line. They endure so much, yet their resilience amazes me every single day.
My new Little Buddy always comes to see me. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get the fishing line off his little foot in time, and now it looks like he may lose it. Clubby was there this morning too. She lost her foot about a year and a half ago. And then there’s sweet Pegleg, another little reminder of what these birds can survive.
The heartbreaking part is that so much of it is preventable.
“You have something to offer that no one else has.”
Maybe what we have to offer doesn’t have to be something enormous. Maybe it’s simply noticing. Caring. Picking up a piece of fishing line. Helping an animal. Looking out for one another. Leaving a place a little better than we found it.
We can do better. We have to do better.
I’m grateful that in my own small way, I can make a difference for these birds. But the beautiful thing is, they make just as much of a difference in my life. Their trust, resilience and excitement when they see me have become some of the greatest gifts of my mornings.
Sometimes you set out to make a difference in someone else’s world and discover that, somewhere along the way, they changed yours too. 🕊️🤍
