Morning Reflections

Checkers and the Quiet Return

I think the pigeons missed me. That was the one thing I worried about most while I was away—whether someone would feed them, make sure they had water, and look out for them the way I try to. They’re the sweetest companions. They bring so much joy into my life with their soft coos, curious eyes, and gentle presence. This morning, the little black-and-white one I call Checkers had string tangled around her feet. I was able to catch her and gently remove it, and in that moment, I felt like I’d done my good deed for the day. It’s my biggest pet peeve—walking the pier and seeing fishing line, string, or hooks scattered around. These tiny things can be life-altering for birds. A tangled foot, a hidden hook—it’s heartbreaking. So if you’re out walking and you see string or fishing line, please pick it up. You might not realize it, but you could be saving a life. Or a foot. This morning reminded me that coming home isn’t just about returning—it’s about showing up again for what you love.

Morning Gratitude Thought

Grateful for the pigeons who greet me, for Checkers and her brave little feet, and for the chance to help. Grateful to be home, where love shows up in feathers and small acts of care.

Checkers--I'm so happy I was able to save her feet. She's so beautiful.

A seagull lands on someone's shoulder at the beach, stealing some popcorn or snacks with the ocean visible in background.

She was grateful I got the string off her feet. I was happy she still came to me. I didn't want to scare her.
